Highway 212 Water System Improvement Project
Water Project Impacts Highway 212
Posted Date: 11/15/2019 4:30 PM

When the Oregon Department of Transportation announced their plans for resurfacing Highway 212 through Damascus, Sunrise Water Authority decided to move up a scheduled water system improvement project in order to avoid damage to new roadways in the future.

The water system improvement project involves rerouting water currently delivered through a 1964 era cast iron transmission main to a nearby ductile iron transmission main.  Older ductile iron pipes, like the one that will be abandoned in this project, are far more brittle and prone to cracking and leaks than newer ductile iron mains.  The section of main being abandoned is part of the one that suffered a major leak on July 3rd, 2017, snarling traffic on the 4th of July weekend and causing the issuance of a drinking water advisory to local citizens and businesses. The intent of the project is to increase reliability of the water supply in this area.

The project work has already started and is expected to be completed by December 18th.  The majority of work will be conducted during night time hours.  Sunrise Water Authority has worked closely with the contractor and the Oregon Department of Transportation to minimize direct impacts to citizens as much as possible given the location of the project.  Citizens that are expected to experience temporary water service interruptions will be notified 48 hours in advance of any planned interruptions.
